Work woes - any advice
Hi all! Sorry I havent posted in a wee while. Hope everyone is ok. Here's the story. My work is made up of three solicitors and 4 secretaries. Another secretary was taken on after Christmas to help with some of my work. Since that time I have had very little work put my way and finding it hard to get a day in doing very little. Is it a situation of me being made scunnered of my work and making me walk out so this other lady can step into my work or am I worrying over nothing. Or should I get out before I am pushed out and find another job. So peoples, o wise ones, hit me with some words of wisdom. Cheers.

Great to hear from you....we were beginning to think that you were just so last century!!!
If you don't like it there and yet, there is plenty similar work to be had elsewhere.......what are you waiting for?
It certainly doesn't sound like you have any particular loyalty for where are you now.
Then again, have you thought of going to the boss and telling her that as things seem to have quietened down, there appears little need to keep the newly hired help on.....

Well hello again?? as Ron says nice to see you back posting, well in fact it is nice to see ANYONE back posting?
I agree with what Ron has said to be honest Gillian, it could be you are worrying over nothing of course, is this new lady particularly friendly with your Boss ie is it a case of bring in my friend and get rid of the "foreigner"? It would not do any harm to be looking at what is out there whilst you are being paid for doing nothing, you never know you might find something, and then you can turn and say bye bye

Hi Gillian. It's been my experience that often things aren't as they look, so honesty is the best way to go. Tell your boss that you need more work, and if need be, ask if there was a specific reason why extra staff was employed. Are some of the other staff not getting work completed on time, and making the excuse that they are over worked? Is the extra staff member for those times when you are all flat out, and the boss is willing to pay extra wages in the slow times to account for this?
Have the chat, the worse that can happen is they are thinking of getting rid of one of the original staff, but it may not be you. Better to know than to assume and leave anyway.

Very true Janelle, the NOT KNOWING sometimes makes you start imagining all sorts, probably better to know?

Thanks folks. Got a load of work out yesterday to keep me going. TBH i really need a job closer to home now. The cost of fuel is unreal and it will soon be costing me most of my wages to go to work and back

Working to live, living to work springs to mind?
Were I you Gillian, i would be scanning the local papers etc, you are doing yourself NO FAVOURS.
far better to be looking for a job whilst you are in one?

Thats so true. Wouldnt leave a job till I was in another one anyway. The local papers get a good scanning each week.

Yeah same job with more dosh. Molly would be scunnered and scared standing outside the office all day. Will miss the lassies when I move on. But where I am is in a bit o a mess the now, the partnership has disolved and two of them are moving to different premises, they wont need all they secretaries for two solicitors. So I think my getting another job was meant to be.
