Scotland in August
Hi All,
One of the bands I'm playing with is coming to the Worlds in August.
I can't go with them for the two weeks they are planning this trip (nor do I want to be stuck on a regimented schedule of bus tours)...so, I'm seeing if I can plan out the trip and join up with them at a later date.
Can anyone recommend a nice but cheap place to stay?
How easy is it to get around in Glasgow?
What sort of things go on around the time of the Worlds?
Thanks a bunch all!!!
Carla

Try the Victorian House hotel, on renfrew street, supposed to be pretty good, b&b 25 gbp per night
Plenty goes on in worlds week, concerts, piping live etc

Aye, only do that if ye want to be with a bunch of stuck up tossers who are that far up their own arse they look like a tire!
Anyway.. aye.. forums will keep ye up to date.. also check out strathclyde uni for accommodation.

Re: Scotland in August
As Robbie says, the Uni is good for cheap accomodation and probably good for being amongst other Pipers etc. plenty goes on Worlds week, The Lord Todd bar, the place to be?
By all means take a visit to Auld Reekie(Edinburgh) just make sure it is a return fare, and you get out of it before dark??
On the day? plenty to see and folks to meet Carla, and maybe play with the band?

Play with the band? Damn, knew there was something i was forgetting about...
Anyway, aye - seroiusly look at strathclyde uni. It's a five minute walk from EVERYTHING except the green... even then its a five minute taxi ride! Plus, anyone whose anyone will be staying at the uni - and as Dai said, all the major events happen either in the Todds, in the Piping Centre or on the square, and each of these are in a very short staggering distance. Plus you have bands practising at strathclyde uni (last year there was shotts, boghall and the 78ths - but to name a few. But we (stirling uni) get SFU.. so up ye's!)

Re: Scotland in August
...only bad thing about Strathclyde is its self catering.. but who needs food?
Re: Scotland in August
Yes must remember about the playing with the band thing...lol
They are staying at Glasgow U.
Not really that interested in going to Edinburgh (what the hell does Auld Reekie mean?) as I was there on my last trip over and it wasn't all that exciting. More to see elsewhere...
Was looking around for accommodations in Glasgow and it looks like there isn't really much anywhere near the Green. That'd be nice and easy...
Thanks for your input everyone. Just figured I might get a few more ideas early on, and then make a decision once I get some straight answers from the tour company that's looking after my band.
"These are the plans, but we still don't know for sure" is the answer I keep getting. And you want me to fork over a few hundred, non-refundable....I don't think so...

Re: Scotland in August
LOL.......funny that....I thought much the same about Toronto....one of the least exciting places I've ever been.
Edinburgh is the centre of the universe....full stop.
But there has to be somewhere to put the less desirable, and that's Weegieville.
Auld Reekie?
Ever heard of google?
Wikipedia?.....
The city is affectionately nicknamed Auld Reekie[12] (Scots for Old Smoky), because when buildings were heated by coal and wood fires, chimneys would spew thick columns of smoke into the air. The colloquial pronunciation "Embra" or "Embro" has also been used[13] as in Robert Garioch's Embro to the Ploy.[14]
An alternative explanation for the nickname "Auld Reekie" is "Old Smelly". The Old Town of Edinburgh had open sewers, and the stench was awful. Furthermore, the citizens of Edinburgh would dispose of their dirty water wastes from the first storey window of their tenements straight onto the streets of the city, augmenting the foul odor from the open sewer.[citation needed]

Re: Scotland in August
boy, do I miss the culinary delights of the burger van at the highland games......NOT.
Or the fish n' chips van.......which overcooked the fish and the chips....they seemed to delight in making the chips as soggy as possible and then compounded it by having the audacity to tell you that they had salt n' vinegar......but no Enbra sauce........bloody peasants.
Or the candy floss......guaranteed to stick your fingers together.....and when you go to the toilets to wash it off, you find that there are no toilets only a sort of windbreak, set up with no wash hand basin in sight......
(Lochearnhead Games were great for that....the windbreak shielded you from the sight of those attending the games, but the other side was wide open to whoever was driving past on the road.....and once the trench was full.....well let's just say, "thank god for the openness of Ghillie brogues". One thing for sure, the Yorkshire tinted hair grannies going past in the Wallace Arnold coaches sure got to see what a Scotchman has under his kilt.....)
Or getting the bus back from games held somewhere in Ayrshire....and stopping off at every pub or legion halls you drove past.....and finding out that the local women were having their night out and all seemed to sing the same Vera Lynn songs after twelve bottkles of Babycham.......whilst the menfolk all seemed to be recalling their participation in Part 2 of the Battle of the Boyne.....which had invariably taken place at Ibrox the previous Saturday......
or trying to get Ballahouston in the first place......you'd think the local council/organisers would actually put signs up that were more than three inches high....they must have thought that people actually knew Glasgow. News for them......Weegieville is for Weegies.....and try asking one of the natives where to go.........they speak some sort of neanderthal language.

Re: Scotland in August
Thanks for that post Ron brought back so many happy??? memories? Oh and the reason they never signposted Bellahouston Park? They actually did,!! the fact that Edinburgens couldnt read? was something they never took into consideration though?
Talking about Food at comps last year I was determined to have a Pie 'n' Chips? no way was I going to Scotland and not imbibing in our national dish, so off I went Fiona decided a Burger was her dish of the day whilst I had my Pie, it was very enjoyable, but when I took a bite of the chips? instead of the usual soggy mess? I near broke a crown they were RAW?? slightly tinted brown but raw. However, I do remember a Bacon Butty that we had 3 or 4 years ago, Redneck and I had arrived at the Green at some ungodly hour of the morning, after getting about 2 hours kip, thanks to his insistence that we emptied his bottle of Mourne Mist? It was the tastiest Bacon Butty ever, The Grease helped soak up the Booze?

Re: Scotland in August
Geez... shyte food at the games over there??? Pretty good here, although I usually stick to the typical burger and fries...usually barely any time to eat during the day with everything going on. Always a granola bar in my sporran, just in case.
Yes...in a way 'Auld Reekie' reminded me of Toronto. Too much craziness, too many people and always in a hurry.

Re: Scotland in August
Pagans and heathens..........the whole bloody lot of you.
Could also be described as those that have fish n' chips without Enbra sauce....
Or those called anything but Alasdair and Fiona......(and Ronald...of course).....
Morningside, Corstorphine and Liberton.........the creme de la creme......
None of your Airth, or East Kilbride nonsense.....
